How do you bypass a Norton Firewall ?

  • Hi guys,

I've just installed this the latest T3CH FAt build on to my XBOX and can get it to work (good news) but only when when i turn off my firewall (bad news)....

I've tried configuring my personal firewall to allow connections to and from the IP address of my XBOX but that didn't sort it.

How do i get round this issue ?

    kind regards

  • I disabled Default Inbound NetBIOS on norton and it works fine, I use windows firewall as well as nortons fire wall and didn't have to alter the wimdows firewall at all.

I think i helped myself but thanks for being there

  • running 2 software firewalls is unneccesary and inefficient. If you're sitting behind a router then you're protected from 99% of inbound threats. That means the firewall is only needed to "protect" you from other devices on your network and to notify you when software on the system is trying to access the web. Other devices should not be a problem if you don't suck at being a sys admin. That leaves stuff running on your local machine, which should never be there in the first place. The vectors of attack in that regard are malicious websites, malicious e-mail attachments, and warez with crap in it. Basically just use a web-based e-mail service (like Gmail), run FireFox with Adblock Plus, switch to OpenDNS, and don't be a dumbass and you pretty much don't have anything to worry about, and don't "need" a firewall.

    But what do I know?

  • I managed to get it to work for a few minutes by deleting the following rule from Norton' firewall.

Block Windows File Sharing - Prevents other computers from accessing shared files that are on this computer. Also prevents other computers from using shared printers that are attached to this computer. - Unless another rule specifically blocks file and print sharing, removing or modifying this rule permits other computers to access shared files that are at this computer and to use printers that are attached to this computer, or Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall prompts the user. The prompt allows the user to permit or disallow the communication, or to create a rule that allows the communication.

    --------------------------

I just tried it again as I was typing and its working again but there is a 2-3 minute delay in opening up the folder. If I turn off norton it opens up straight away.

So I guess I have two problems 1) It doesn't work some of the time. 2) slow loading times, although thats not a big problem.

Any ideas whats causing this ?

There are other default rules on norton that may be affecting this but I don't understand the implications of turning stuff off.

below is a link to the default norton settings. Rule 6 looks like it may be an issue, can anyone advise?

  • Norton Firewall software sucks.
    Bypass by uninstalling it :)

  • A little more information:

My XBOX and PC are both Wireless

My xbox is hard modded with an evox dashboard

    I'm connecting via SMB

I'm using the latest version of Norton Internet security

My PC doesn't have a login (I've only got one account set up) & theres no password to get in.

  • You're trying to connect to you pc with smb (windows file sharing) and norton's firewall has it blocked. Looks like you've proved that :)
I don't think (m)any people would recommend norton as a firewall, I've never used it, but you can probably look up how to allow just your local xbox to pass through.
Disabling it is most likely not a problem if you're behind a gateway like a wireless router and trust the clients on your lan - bear in mind you've got no password
