I'm going to Japan next year in April, when will a good time be for me to exchange my NZ dollars to Yen?

  • I hope you enjoy your trip to Japan, unfortunately now is a bad time to be changing the kiwi dollar into yen. It wasn't so long ago heaps of people were investing in New Zealand dollars to take advantage of the high interest rate, that pushed up the NZ dollar against the yen and you could get around 90 yen for NZ$1. Now you are lucky to get 50yen for NZ$1 ! Ouch !!

Could it get worse? Maybe. Could I get better? Maybe. Personally I think it will stay about the same or get slightly worse. With New Zealand interest rates falling quickly investing in NZ dollars has lost its appeal.

The funny thing is, I was hoping to visit Japan next year too !! But I've decided to postpone my trip due to the credit crisis.

Regarding where to change money, most ATMs in Japan do not accept foreign ATM cards. However it is quite common for the machines at the Japanese Post Office to accept international ATM cards (those belonging to the Cirrus or PLUS interbank networks).

You could also consider travellers checks, they can be cashed at major hotels and banks. I recommend getting them denominated in yen, you can then avoid getting burned on the US dollar to yen conversion.

Japan is a cash based society, and relatively safe, so it is probably OK to carry a reasonable amount of cash with you. Paying by EFTPOS is not common in Japan like it is in New Zealand, so expect to pay for most things by cash.

  • I wouldn't worry about it just yet, but keep an eye on the exchange rates and change some when the rate is favorable to you. Even so, unless a really great rate comes up in December or something, you might want to wait until as close to your trip as possible. You run less of a risk of changing your money, having to cancel your trip, and having to change it all back (and probably losing some money from all the changes) if you wait. Or you could just leave all of your money in the bank and start withdrawing it when you get there. I usually do that because my local banks like to charge me a lot to change my money to something as exotic as yen (I live in the middle of nowhere, the only thing NOT exotic other than USD is Canadian currency). So make sure you do your research on whether or not you'll be charged anything to change your money before you go.

  • Make sure you exchange a certain amount of dollars to yen BEFORE you leave New Zealand. You will need some almost immediately upon arrival.

Do NOT purchase traveler's cheques as they are extremely difficult to cash. Some hotels will cash them, but only if you stay there.

  • I am not sure if you are asking when will be the best exchange rate or when it is easiest to exchange it. I'll answer the latter since the guy before me answer the former well. I go there once a year and use the ATM at the airport. It does charge me the ATM use fee (around $2.50 USD) though other than that you get the exact exchange rate. Just make sure you do it at the airport as it is hard to find ATMs anywhere else.
