  • Please help, the firewall says that I'm browsing the web with explorer.exe, not IE Explorer. Never seen this before, can anyone help. I tried blocking explorer and was not able to browse at all. Why it's working with windows explorer instead of IE explorer is worrying me. If anyone knows anything about this condition please respond.

  • Just a long shot.Click start>settings>folder options>file types tab>scroll down registerd file types to html >does it show open with Internet explorer or windows explorer?.If its windows explorer change it to always open files of this type with IE.Also check url file protocol to url hyper text protocol opens with IE too

  • I am using Win2K SP3. I cannot remember either on win 98 I will check when I getr to work on Monday.

  • I dont understand your abbreviations. The options I showed do exactly the same thing as your original registry tweak. I dont use anything else to seperate IE from WE, and I did before I used this get WE trying to connnect to the internet rather than IE but I dont now. This way you dont need to mess with the registry directly. I didnt see MegaHertz's post when I posted my reply, so it may already be an option (although I suspect he is using win XP)

  • ...many thanks for the Registry tweak, Phil

That problem with W/E occurred for me a few weeks ago too - and, for the life of me, i couldn't remove it

Ended up un-installing/reinstalling OP to resolve the issue

    Should've checked here first! :)

    thanks again

  • Thank you Phil Greg, that registry fix did the trick. I am now browsing with IE again. Thak you very much. :D

Chris & Vish, YW. BTW, there's no clear reason why WE sometimes does that. I've never had it happen on any of my machines but in the past year I've prolly posted that solution a coupla dozen times:-)

  • Hi casper,
I seriously doubt you got infected downloading drivers from legitimate manufacterer sites. The problem is thh warez, porn and similar sites. I have been on the web ocassionally with outpost off for troubleshooting purposes.
Delete your iexplore and explore apps from teh OP app list. Get into rules wizard mode and start your browser. When you get the popup, use the browser preset rule.

    Sorry, it should've read Casper999

I think I got this from Axel216's web site here (http://members.aol.com/axcel216/)

I believe that it's not the same thing. IIRC the option you are talking about allows 2 separate browser windows to be open. IOW if your browser is currently open and you click a link a separate browser process begins resulting in a second browser window opening. the reg tweak separates IE from WE

  • Bassbag, thanks for the reply. Under HTML Applications, it opens with MSHTA. Under HTML Document, it opens with IEXPLORE. I looked at the running processes with a process viewer too and IE Explorer is not even listed as running when on the web. I don't know what to think about this, everything seems to be working OK as far as browsing the web goes. I would just feel better to have IE Explorer working too.

  • What version of windows are you using MegaHertz? I cant remember seeing that in Windows 98SE, but I could be mistaken. Its called slightly different in mine, but I cant remember how it was before I applied the reg file.

  • Hi

I have exactly the same on my PC using Win 98SE.

However, since I started using Outpost, I have never had IE on my applications list nor has it ever popped up requesting a connection through Outpost.

It has always been Explorer (Explorer.exe) on the list. Without it, you can't browse the web.

Quite why this should be is a mystery, but as it doesn't seem to cause a problem, I wouldn't worry about it.

  • Hi casper999,
    Welcome to the forums.
Where is Iexplorer.exe in the application list. Make sure it isn't in blocked.
    What OS are you using?
    Chris

  • Thanks for replying, IE exporer is in trusted apps.. I tried to block windows explorer, but then I could not hook-up to the web. I'm using win.98se for a OS. I just did a clean install of the OS today. I had to browse the web for a short while without a firewall, had to download it and some other drivers for my computer. I hope I didn't get infected while getting these!!!

    TY -))
I discovered the cure about 2 years ago while doing some reading on line. Since then I have literally suggested it dozens of times in diff. NGs

  • Here is what my app list looks like ( see screenshot)

  • Within my partial trusted zone I also have listed IE exployer exe .In the block list one can't access the web. I don't really see a problem with the way OP has this set up. If your using Opera as your default browser OP will recognize this browser when your surfing. If you switch over to IE 5.5 than clear your rules in your zone.....than OP will pop up a window for you to set your rules based on Ie 5.5....My point being OP when installed and your began to access the web with Opera.....had set up rules based on this browser.

  • No problem. But like I said in my earlier post I use X-Setup to do 99% of my OS tweaks. That is why I had forgotten about the option in explorer. Take care.

  • Hi PhilGreg!

    That cracked it! Thanks.

    Vish

  • Chrisclu, I tried what you suggested. It did not work. If I block windows explorer, I cannot hook-up to the web. With windows explorer as a trusted app., I can browse the web with no problem. I downloade tauscan and updated it. Then ran a scan, nothing detected. I also ran a AV scan, nothing there either. I/m baffled by this. Can't get IE explorer to work. I just downloaded and installed Outpost and updated it too. This is very strange to me. Outpost always had IE explorer before, never had this surfing with windows explorer before. If you have anymore suggestions, please send them. Thanks for trying.

  • There used to actually be a setting in the advanced tab of internet options that gave you the ability to make that change from within IE. I now use X-Setup (see screenshot) to enable that tweak since M$ has removed it from IE. X-Setup can be dowloaded from here (http://www.xteq.com/).

Internet Explorer is so deeply embedded into 9X that it's [possible to go to Windows Explorer (WE) and enter an URL into the addy bar and connect to it.

For your situation, try this registry tweak

Start/ type in regedit and hit
    From HKEY_Current_User drill down to;
    SoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorer BrowserNewProcess

In the right pane change 'NO' to 'YES'
A reboot may be required for the registry change to take effect. That will stop WE from connecting to the net.

Next delete WE and IE from OP and reconnect to the net

Let me know if your prob persists

  • After my last post I did some more investigating and found the option (see screenshot) in Explorer.

  • I think it may be worth repairing internet explorer by going to add/remove programmes in control panel .Highlight microsoft Internet explorer and click add remove. An option to repair will appear proceed to repair.Delete the entries out of outpost and use rules wizard again after repair.
